Winter Care of Guinea Pigs

Although guinea pigs are native to the Andes, the ones we have at home have little to do with these from Peru. The guinea pigs that we know, like rabbits, do not tolerate extreme temperatures well, and can suffer heat stroke in summer, or a severe cold in winter. At this time more than ever, we must be careful with their diet and pay special attention to every detail.

What additional care should we take into account?

If the guinea pig lives with us inside the house, we will always try to keep it away from possible drafts, that is, we will never put the cage near doors and windows, which can create drafts when opened.

On the other hand, it is not recommended to have the cage directly on the floor (unless we have underfloor heating), since it is always the coldest part of the house.

Especially in the colder months, we recommend putting a bit of Sweet Dreams inside the guinea pig's house, or in the corner where it usually sleeps. With this material we will get a warm and comfortable shelter so that our guinea pig can take refuge on the coldest nights. Here you can get it!

Diet also plays an important role in the health of the guinea pig. Most of us know that just like people, guinea pigs can't make their own vitamin C, so they have to ingest it. We recommend that during the cold months, we provide them with fresh foods rich in this vitamin, such as red and green peppers, arugula, strawberries, oranges, tangerines...

You can find extensive information about food in our previous articles: Food part 1 y Food part 2.

Guinea pigs are very sensitive to changes in temperature. If we add the vitamin C deficit to this factor, we find that they can catch a cold very easily. In our next article we will explain Cold symptoms in guinea pigs "click here".
