Reproduction of Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are born, contrary to other rodents, with hair, good eye sight, and other traits that make them like tiny adults. And life goes on pretty quick as female Guinea Pigs (sows) are sexually mature very soon, at around 2 months of age. Males (boars), however, are sexually mature a month later, at 3 months of age.

During the year, females can have fertile periods at any time, but they are most common in the spring. The estrous cycle length is 16 days. When the female gets pregnant, the gestation period is 59 to 73 days, after which there is birth.

The litter size ranges from 1 to 8 pups, but a litter of 2 to 4 is more common. A female can give birth to up to 5 litters per year. So… the most they could have would be up to 40 pups (8 pups x 5 litters) a year!!! But nearly impossible… don’t worry.

After birth

A new estrous cycle can begin shortly after giving birth and if you do not want any other pregnancy to happen that soon, you should retire the males around her, because they could try to mate the new mother.

Their reproductive life is up to 4 or 5 years, although after 2 years and before 6 months and a half years there is more chance that the offsprings are not born completely healthy.
