The life cycle of a Guinea pig

When a Guinea Pig is born she/he is already developed in many aspects and can be independent very soon afterwards. Contrary to baby rabbits, for example, guinea pigs can see completely, have all their teeth and all their hair. In fact, they are like little adult guinea pigs.

Female guinea pigs give birth to their babies after an approximate period of two months. When guinea pig pups are born they stay next to the mother to be fed and to keep a good temperature.

A happy guinea pig!

In their youth and adulthood, guinea pigs organize themselves in patriarchal hierarchy, so it is better not to keep males together, unless they are neutered, because they can fight. However, a sociable guinea pig does not bite or scratch, unless he/she is scared. Guinea pigs are in general very sociable and docile. It is very important they do not get stressed, thoug. Being gentle and nice to them, as well as keeping them well fed and cleaned are ways to ensure this.

How many years do they live?

When they are old, they suffer from different ailments, such as arthritis, cataracts and dry skin. Looking after them well with good feed and good care is essential. Guinea pigs can live an average of 6 to 8 years, although some have reached 12 years of age. What we can assure, though, is that while they are alive they can bring happiness to your home and you can bring happiness to them.
