As a general rule, the cold begins in the upper respiratory tract, which means that surely the first thing we can observe in our guinea pig is: watery or rheumy eyes, runny nose, lack of appetite and finally difficulty breathing.
We must be aware of these symptoms, because if we ignore them, a simple cold can turn into pneumonia, much more difficult to cure.
What steps should we follow?
The first step will be to locate the cage in a place away from air currents, and with a temperature between 20 and 22 ºC.
We will make sure to give our guinea pig fresh foods rich in vitamin C, such as red and green peppers, orange... (You can see more details in our previous article).
If our guinea pig has dry mucus and its eyes are closed due to rheum, we will use a gauze soaked in serum to clean them. We will pass it gently several times, until we manage to clean it completely.
It is possible that our guinea pig also has mucus stuck to its front legs, if it needs to be cleaned, in this case we will use the same system to remove it.
And if after a few days it does not improve?
If we see that the cold is in an advanced state, we can also add a few drops of Redoxon in drops, in the drinking water. We must change it every day, since vitamin C oxidizes and ceases to have its properties.
In very extreme cases, we can directly give the Rodoxon in the mouth, with the help of a syringe.
And there is little else we can do for her. If she doesn't improve, we'll take her to the vet as soon as possible, in case she has to undergo antibiotic treatment.
