Like all pets, our dwarf rabbit is also growing. Dwarf rabbits have their first heat around 4-5 months.
heat appears
The fact that the first heat appears does not mean that dwarf rabbits be prepared to breed, as the male's sperm is not fertile and the female's ovulation is often false. We will have to wait until our dwarf rabbit reaches 8-9 months to have a successful mount and to make sure that the health of our pet is not in any danger.
Behavior changes
During the heat period it is very possible that our dwarf rabbit's behavior will change. It can become territorial in its cage, even biting, it may be that it pees all over the house to mark its territory or it may be that, on the contrary, it becomes sweeter and cleaner; knowing how our dwarf rabbit will react is a lottery. A physical symptom of heat is the swelling and redness of the vulva in females, and the male's attempts to mount anything, including ourselves.
It is important to try that the male and the female are of a similar size, since a very large male could cause the delivery to be complicated due to puppies that are too large for their mother.
The best location
It is best for dwarf rabbits to be mounted on a neutral site or in the male's territory. In this way, the male is relaxed and the female is more predisposed to mount. Copulation lasts approximately 15 seconds, ending with the male jumping backwards, but it is best to leave the female with the male for a whole day.
the gestation
The gestation period lasts from 30 to 32 days. During this period we will begin to notice changes in our bunny. She's going to drink more water, she's going to start removing hair to make the nest, her breasts are going to swell, she's going to become more surly with the male (if they're together).
Hatchlings
Normally, in dwarf rabbits, the number of pups at birth can range from 1 to 5.
Our bunny has four pairs of breasts, so our kittens shouldn't have problems feeding, but we should be careful in case the mother rejects one and we have to feed it with a bottle.
In case we notice that something is not working correctly, we will go to the vet as soon as possible.
