A dwarf rabbit and a guinea pig can become great friends.

For this to happen, it is necessary that first of all we observe them separately to know their characters, since it will be essential for the period of socialization. If we start from the basis that the rabbit is territorial by nature and the guinea pig is a social animal and much more docile, the ideal thing, unless we have them together since they were little, would be to incorporate the guinea pig first.

How do we have to socialize?

At the beginning we will leave, as we have said before, a period of socialization, that is, we will have the rabbit and the guinea pig next to each other but without contact. After a few days, we will gather them outside the cage (neutral zone), so that they get to know each other. And finally they will be able to live together always inside the guinea pig's cage. When choosing the cage for the guinea pig, we must take this detail into account, since it will be the final cage and therefore it must be the largest.

And if we already have the dwarf rabbit?

In case we already have a dwarf rabbit in our house and we decide to have a guinea pig, a good decision would be to sterilize our rabbit. With this small operation, we make sure that the rabbit does not show its instinct for territoriality and with this we make the adaptation of the guinea pig much easier and safer.

Can we put another animal as a playmate, such as a chinchilla?

We can also put our rabbit together with a chinchilla for example. We must always take into account to gather different animals, that their diet is as similar as possible. For example, the basic diet of a dwarf rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla is hay, so there is no problem keeping them together because all three animals can and should eat hay. If we talk about prepared foods, it is best that we try to get each one to eat their own, either separating them for half an hour to eat, or in any other way we can imagine. In the event that this is not possible, since they are such nutritionally similar animals, the fact that they eat part of another's food will not cause them any health problems, although they will never be able to eat all of a food that is not theirs.
