The coexistence of my Dog with a Dwarf Rabbit

The coexistence of my Dog with a Dwarf Rabbit

The coexistence of another animal with a dwarf rabbit it can be a bit complicated. We already know that the rabbit is prey for many predators. For this reason, it is programmed to flee if it hears any noise, or perceives any movement that seems to be a threat.

Each dog is different, a Golden or a Martin is not the same as a Terrier, a male as a female, and a street dog is not the same as a domestic one. Our dog is used to the firm and clear word NO that we have been instilling in him for a long time to correct those habits that should never be allowed in a good coexistence.

First steps for our dwarf rabbit

Upon arrival of our dwarf rabbit, we must leave it in the cage for a few days without harassing it too much (we will take it out to investigate when the dog is not present). Our dog will get used to it by smelling his cage and seeing the area that we have suitable for the dwarf rabbit.

At some point and without stressing the dwarf rabbit, we will take it out of the cage in front of the dog and let it sniff a bit. Surely our dog will get excited, drool or try to catch it... it's normal! For him it is like a new toy and with our help he will learn to distinguish that it is an animal and his new companion.

We start the routine

We will continue with the routine of taking him out every day so that they get to know each other and that is how the day will come when we will take him out of the cage and leave him on the floor always and obligatorily under our supervision. We will see our little dwarf rabbit, run away or stay still. If our dog tries something that we think may bother the little one, we will say a resounding NO. Every day we will extend these appointments. Obviously, if his behavior is correct, we will reward the dog with an exquisite treat or snack. “here you can buy the most delicious snacks”

With time we will see that they are respected. There are dogs that make great friends with any other animal, whether or not it is of their species.

Coexistence dwarf rabbit and cats

With cats we must follow the same guidelines, simply follow these steps without haste, and we will see how we can have a fantastic coexistence, and who knows if a new friendship and reason for games for all.
