Firework celebrations are exciting for us, but they can turn into a real nightmare for our animals. The roar, flashes of light, and vibrations can cause anxiety, panic and even flight in many domestic species.
Here we tell you how you can help your pet—whether it's a dog, cat, bird, rabbit, or rodent—feel safer during these times.
Dogs: How to Help Them
Dogs are especially sensitive to loud noises. Some key actions:
- Take him out for a walk before the fireworks start.
- Create a safe haven at home (a closed room, with your bed, toys, and soft music).
- Don't punish him if he gets scared: stay calm and accompany him.
- You can use natural calming products or consult your veterinarian about more specific options if your dog is very sensitive.
Cats: quiet spaces and escape control
- Close windows and balconies.
- Prepare a quiet corner with blankets and hiding places.
- Don't force them to go out: respect their space.
- Use synthetic pheromones to reduce stress (consult your veterinarian).
Rabbits and rodents: shelter and sound insulation
- Insulate the cage from noise (you can partially cover the cage with a breathable blanket).
- Place the cage in an interior room with no windows or closed blinds.
- Avoid moving them abruptly during fireworks.
- You can offer him natural snacks to help him distract himself and calm down.
Birds: environmental control and emotional stability
- Lower the light intensity in the room.
- Partially cover the cage with a light fabric to reduce visual stimuli.
- Avoid moving the cage around, as this also causes stress.
- Stay close to speak softly and convey calm.
General tips for all pets
- Close windows and blinds to muffle the sound.
- Play soft music or white noise background.
- Prevent them from being alone if you know they are afraid.
- Consult with your vet if necessary, resort to tranquilizers or natural products.
- Identification always up to date, in case they were to escape from the scare.
And remember: what's a party for us can be a terrifying experience for them. Every little helps make them feel protected.
